Survival Log Day 3: A Day at the Fair

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

Today I hosted a table for WWRM at the New Student and Parent Orientation Information Fair here on campus.  It was something.

I played music with WWRM’s jammin’ sound system, but for the first hour, the music wasn’t so jammin’.  It turns out that my iPod and the amplifier weren’t getting along.  But they resolved the issue, and for the next two hours the music sounded great.  People danced.  And they weren’t even drunk.  And someone was drawn into the Fair from the street by Streetlight Manifesto.  He totally signed up to be a radio DJ.  O the power of music.

A lot of people came to the table.  Some just came for the free buttons.  Some came because they are super cool people who are jazzed about getting involved with the coolest radio station ever.  Yeah, that’s right.  People signed up.  There will be some hot new shows on the schedule this season.  Holla.

Today I also finished the seemingly impossible task of alphabetizing the CD library.  In addition to our Color Me Badd album, we have Rick Astley’s album.  We also have three albums by Sheep on Drugs.  So, we’ve got that going for us.

Super exciting news!  WWRM has been invited to participate in Get!Downtown.  It’s this ridiculous fantasy festival in downtown Lynchburg.  Free admission.  Live music and street performers.  Karaoke and a Graffiti Wall.  And little ol’ WWRM will be there playing music next to the belly dancers, fire breathers, and stilt walkers.  Think about it.  That’s Sept 11, 6-9pm people.

Survival Log Day 1: Excavation and Organization

Kreig here.  WWRM’s station manager for the 09-10 academic year.  Before classes start on the 31st, I’ll be spending the week assisting The Worm in breaking out of its crystalline summer cocoon.

Good news.  The WWRM office now has an awesome storage cabinet for the ridiculous DJ sound system the station bought last year.  Thanks to B&G for fine craftsmanship and a sparkly coat of white paint.

Unusual things I found while cleaning/reorganizing the WWRM office and radio booth: 1. 7 rolls of paper towels, 2. a near life-size cardboard mini cooper standee, 3. all kinds of electronic doolollies that look like they came from a robot’s nervous system, 4. bloody mary mix, 5. several yards of gold sequined fabric, 6. pineapple scented 3D puff paint, 7. a winter coat from Gap.

I also found a list of DJs.  There was a year when WWRM had 50 DJs.  Think about it.  Goal for this year: accumulate a respectable number of DJs.

The station has a decent CD collection.  And by the end of this week, it will be alphabetically organized.  You’ll all be glad to hear that WWRM proudly owns a Color Me Badd album.  I had a philosophical moment when I was alphabetizing CDs and I shelved Coldplay next to Color Me Badd.  Coldplay is a band I love and respect.  Color Me Badd is an infamous band with a confusing name that I like to make fun of.

I will start scheduling new shows soon.  Until then, keep listening to cool shows from the last year’s show archive.  That’s what I’ll be listening to tomorrow when I’m shelving CDs and pouring out old bloody mary mix.

Look out for WWRM flyers popping up on campus soon.
